How Ehrler Would Attack the Red

E-mail Print PDF

By Pete Robbins

February 22, 2012

classic-logo-3dCalifornia bass pro Brent Ehrler is no stranger to either championship-level competition or the Red River.

Since he fishes the FLW Tour and not the Bassmaster Elite Series, he won’t compete in this month’s Bassmaster Classic on the Red, but Ehrler is intimately familiar with the pressures attendant to fishing for all the marbles in what amounts to a winner-take-all showdown. He’s fished six consecutive FLW Tour Championships, finishing in the top seven on three occasions, including a victory on Alabama’s Lake Logan Martin in 2006. Prior to that he won the 2004 EverStart Championship on Kentucky’s stingy Lake Cumberland.

Kennedy Hopes for Red River Redemption

By Alan Clemons

February 21, 2012

classic-logo-3dSteve Kennedy doesn’t really know what to expect when he heads to the Red River for the Bassmaster Classic.

Two trips in February have given the veteran Alabama pro a good look at the northeast Louisiana River at its best and worst. When the Classic is held Feb. 24-26, Kennedy’s hoping for the best.

“I’ve been down there twice,” he said. “The first was in 2009 for the Classic and the three practice days the week before (the tournament) were pretty good. It was warm and the fish were moving in to spawn. I saw one stump with three going about 15 pounds on it, and probably saw 70 or 80 fish.

T.O.’s Next Goal? Win His Second Classic

E-mail Print PDF

By Steve Price

February 15, 2012

classic-logo-3dOne day back in 1992 a young Japanese angler named Takahiro Omori wrote his list of personal goals on a sheet of paper.  Among them was to qualify for the Bassmaster Classic in 10 years, which would be 2001, and win the Classic three years later, in 2004.

His friends in Tokyo laughed at him.  Afterall, he was just 22, had never been to the United States, and didn’t even speak English.

Still, Omori followed his dreams, and never forgot the goals on that sheet of paper.  He did qualify for the Bassmaster Classic in 2001, and in 2004 he won the Classic.  Today, eight years after that amazing triumph, T.O. has written down another goal, which is to win his second Bassmaster Classic.

Faircloth Staying Calm before Red River Shootout

Todd Faircloth is generally not the type of person that works himself up too much preparing for any given tournament. It’s that kind of calm that has led him to cash a check in 111 of 153 BASS tournaments, an unbelievable 72.5% of the time. It’s that kind of calm that has also helped him qualify for 10 of the last 13 Bassmaster Classics. Always one of the most consistent anglers on the tour, Todd’s even keel has allowed him to make a name for himself as a threat to win on almost any waterbody at any time of the year.

Faircloth hasn’t been a pushover once the Classic begins, either. He’s posted three top 10s and finished inside the top 20 three other times, so it’s safe to say that the Jasper, TX angler won’t be considered a long shot when handicapping the field in the coming weeks.

Fishing in Canada’s Capital

Flowing past the foot of Canada’s Parliament and 4th largest city, the Ottawa River may rank as one of Canada’s least appreciated recreational fisheries.  Musky, Pike, Bullhead, Carp, Large, Small and White Bass, Black Crappie, Perch, Walleye and Sauger are all there waiting to be caught.  What makes fishing the Ottawa even more memorable is its natural beauty.

At 1,271 km or 863 miles, the Ottawa River is the second longest river in Canada to drain into the Atlantic Ocean. Its headwaters are situated deep within the province of Quebec. The river itself meanders its way west through a chain of lakes to Lake Timiskaming, before turning south and southeast where it straddles the Quebec / Ontario provincial border, eventually emptying into the mighty St. Lawrence river.
