Fishing sonar technology is certainly advancing at a rapid pace, evidenced by the release of Humminbird’s 360 degree imaging technology since my last column earlier this year.  Just when you think you have your brain wrapped around the existing technology, yet another exciting and interesting update is released for anglers to better understand the underwater world below.

The Alabama Rig Goes South

May 9, 2012

The Alabama Rig has swept across the bass fishing nation faster than anything I've seen since the Slug-Go introduced us to the soft jerk bait.  Contriversial, banned in some states, voted out of the B.A.S.S.Elite series, you can't check the weather on the Net without a disscussion about the Alabama rig.  But travel a couple of hundred miles south of it's birth place and the controversies are very different.  The burning question that we've set out to answer is how, or even if, you adapt the Alabama rig to shallow, weed-choked Florida waters.

The airport in Guadalajara was crowded.

I finally got my ticket and walked into a waiting area when I saw a friend waving at me from the other side of the room. My friend was accompanied by another guy I recognized. I hustled across the room to join them.

The friend I ran into that day in Mexico was Shaw Grigsby. Yes, “that” Shaw Grigsby. I don’t have to tell anyone who has spent time following professional bass fishing much about Shaw. Besides being one of the nicest guys you’ll find anywhere, he’s proven his fish-catching ability all over the country.

You’d also have recognized the guy, perhaps even more quickly, that Shaw was with. It was KVD.  Chances are his initials are all I have to use to provide his identification. If you don’t recognize that KVD stands for Kevin Van Dam then odds are you don’t know a bass from your bellybutton.

3 Doors Down Bassist Takes First Place With His Father In 5TH Annual Porter Wagoner Memorial Artists & Anglers Fishing Tournament

E-mail Print PDF
(Nashville, Tennessee...) Todd Harrell, bassist for rock band 3 Doors Down, and his pro bass angler father Bobby Harrell were crowned the winners of Saturday’s 5th Annual Porter Wagoner Memorial Artists & Anglers Memorial Fishing Tournament. They also took home the prize for Big Fish with a nice 3.71 lb. largemouth. Ironically, 3 Doors Down lead singer Brad Arnold won the tournament in 2010, proving that the band knows how to fish!  A total of 21 boats braved thunderstorms and wind soon after launching from Elm Hill Recreation Area.
Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits weighmaster George Braswell brought each team on stage at Bass Pro Shops Opry Mills location where the Harrell/Harrell team weighed in five fish for a total of 11.28 pounds. Pro angler Chad Morgenthaler and new artist Chelsea Rae placed second with 8.15 pounds, and Phoenix Bass Boat Pro Gary Clouse and former Trailer Choir member Crystal Hoyt followed a close third with 8.03 pounds. The Clouse/Hoyt team also won the award for “Big Crappie” at .71 pounds.
In addition to bragging rights and trophies, prizes for the top three finishers and Big Bass team included Costa Del Mar sunglasses, Shimano fishing reels, TFO fishing rods, Gary Yamamoto Custom Bait gift packs and gear. The team with the largest crappie received a $1500 fishing prize package courtesy of Paul Alpers and Crappie Masters.
All fish were safely released back into the water.
Primary sponsors for the event include Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits, Costa Del Mar Sunglasses, Shimano, Temple Fork Outfitters, Texas Roadhouse Restaurants, Camp Chef and AFTCO.

Porter Wagoner, who in addition to being one of the most popular stars ever to grace the stage of the Grand Old Opry, was an avid bass fisherman. In his spare time, he could often be found fishing on local lakes. His daughter, Denise, has fished every year of the event in his honor.

Beatin' The Bank with Bernie Schultz—BASS Elite Lake Okeechobee Power Pole Slam—pt. 2

April 27, 2012

Day Two of the BASS Elite Series Power-Pole Slam on Lake Okeechobee came quick. It was "Cut Day", which meant by day's end 50 competitors would be sent home. Sitting in 51st place with slightly less than 12 pounds, I knew I had to get busy.

As I sat waiting for take-off to commence, sequential images of the 6-pounder I lost the day prior pounded my head like a migraine—reminding me of how I had, so far, wasted my best opportunity.

Although I knew I would begin the day at the same concrete bulkhead, what I would do after that was still undecided.
